Rocky Point No. 1 and the rest of the series is inspired by the point separating Torquay and Jan Juc, Wadawurrung Country, Surf Coast Australia.
This series has a lot of similarities to the nearby Bells Beach series. Turquoise water and a mix of earthy tones with bright bold pinks and purples. The vegetation also has a lot more details like in the Bells series, creating loads of interest. For me the technique with the leaves is another way I can freely and intuitively express colour and tone.
This perspective of Rocky Point is captured beautifully by Linda Gorfol, a local Torquay photographer. You can see the original inspiration image in the photo gallery. As always I love to use the image as a base point. Always at some point during the creation of the vegetation I allow intuition to take over and I step away from the image. My artworks are, to me, the beautiful balance between realism and abstract. Taking an image known to the viewer and allowing my more playful side to express itself.
Rocky Point no. 1 has a mix of teal, turquoise, aqua, lilac, sand, magenta, coral pink, dusty pink, pale orange, deep purple, yellow/green, green/gold, burnt umber and olive green. Rocky Point no. 1 is one of the more vibrant, colourful artworks from the series. Each artwork I allow to evolve naturally, the results are that evey artwork is unique.
