Description
“Surf Coast Sunrise no.3” – Original Artwork by Lauren Danger. Created in March 2024.
“Surf Coast Sunrise no.3” came from a place of wanting to shake things up. I usually have some time off around the beginning of the year and it give me a moment to pause from what I’m usually creating. I carved out time to do whatever had come to mind.
There’s just so much to be said about colours, textures, images and techniques that I used. I challenged myself to mix colours that I wouldn’t normally use on my palette. This idea came from a studio play I did with my son Archer. He mixed some colours I normally wouldn’t pair and I found some beautiful new tones to try. There was also the influence of the ocean; as I’ve been enjoying some sunrise ocean swims and I’ve been drawn to the pops of fluorescent pinks and greens amongst the more muted ocean colours. I also found myself wanting to return to my original style of working from imagination and not from a photo. I feel I do my best abstract work this way.
I moved from working on un stretched canvas to smaller stretched canvases to see what would happen. I started noticing myself return to techniques I hadn’t used in some time such as palette knives, especially in this artwork. I have become more and more drawn to wanting to express limestone and cliff faces with a palette knife. This particular view is of memory when I visit Fishermans Beach in Torquay for an ocean swim. I love the layers of sky, land and sea and I think the palette knife worked beautifully in this layout.
I feel as thought “Surf Coast Sunrise no.2” resembles the good parts of what came out of the last few months in the studio. I love the pop of pink against these new greens and blues I found.
This artwork has been created on a custom made stretched canvas ready to hang and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. This artwork has been framed in a float frame made of raw oak. You can find out all about the details of my originals here.
